Background of the Study
Peer pressure is a powerful social force that can influence adolescents’ behavior, sometimes leading to negative outcomes such as involvement in cultism. In Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, peer groups exert considerable influence on students, often encouraging behaviors that deviate from academic and social norms (Ebigbo, 2023). Research indicates that when students are exposed to peers who engage in deviant activities, they may feel compelled to conform, resulting in a heightened risk of cult involvement (Ibe, 2024). Social dynamics, identity formation, and the need for acceptance play a significant role in this process. Educational institutions and community leaders are increasingly concerned about the rising trend of cultism among students. This study examines how peer pressure contributes to cultist behaviors, seeking to unravel the underlying social mechanisms and identify potential preventive measures (Uche, 2025). By understanding the influence of peer pressure, stakeholders can develop targeted interventions that foster positive social interactions and discourage deviant group behavior.
Statement of the Problem
The prevalence of cultism among students in Ikpoba-Okha is exacerbated by strong peer pressure. Many students succumb to negative influences in their social circles, leading to increased involvement in cult activities (Ebigbo, 2023). This environment poses risks not only to individual academic performance but also to community safety and social cohesion. The lack of effective preventive programs and counseling exacerbates the issue. This study aims to identify the specific ways peer pressure drives cult involvement and to propose strategies to mitigate its adverse effects.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the effect of peer pressure on students’ involvement in cultism within Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State. It does not extend to other forms of peer influence.
